ICYMI: MAJOR STORIES OVER THE WEEKEND
It was an interesting weekend to round off a week, with very notable events occurring across the world from the aspects of entertainment to sports and even politics.
On the sports end, superathlete and women’s tennis legend, Serena Williams, was denied a record tying 24th grandslam title (that’s when a tennis player wins the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and then the US Open – the four biggest titles in Tennis) as she was edged out of a US Open victory by the 20 year old Japan born Naomi Osaka to whom she lost 6-2, 6-4.

Serena who, apparently frustrated by decisions made during the match, called the overseeing official “a thief”, accused him of sexism and attempting to sabotage her history making moment, has had disciplinary action taken against her as she was fined $17,000 for three code violations amidst a storm of reaction both supporting and repudiating her actions.
The second biggest story coming over the weekend was the death of US rapper Mac Miller who died of a drug overdose at the age of 26. Miller, who had been enduring a difficult patch especially after his break up with popstar Ariana Grande, was found dead in his Los Angeles home.
There were also reports of FG notcorruption coming in as the Osun State Guber elections draw closer. Reports have it that about ₦16bn was transferred secretly to Osun State, a questionable action that prompted the resignation of the Osun State Accountant General as he also informed banks against honouring withdrawal orders with his signatures.
In other news, at the New York Fashion Party over the weekend, there was a brief altercation between two giants of female rap, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj which apparently involved Cardi’s shoe being thrown at Nicki over accusations that Nicki was colluding with elements in the industry to see that Cardi B got only smaller, less successful and less influential. Cardi’s Instagram came alive with a post to this effect with the link below. This isn’t the first time Nicki is being accused of this, some time in 2016, another female rapper Remy Ma, came up with similar words for Nicki.
Elsewhere, George Zimmerman, the acquitted civilian killer of unarmed black teenager, Trayvon Martins has set both Beyonce and Jay Z in his sights as he threatened to have them fed to a 13 foot alligator. The threats came after a documentary on the vulnerability of black people to racism, institutional violence and police brutality using the Trayvon Martin case as a point of study, was sponsored and released by the power couple. As of yet, no comments have been received from Jay or Bey.
It was an interesting weekend with these as the major players.
And hey! Did we forget to state? Drake and Meek Mill are friends again!
